Torture Team by Philippe Sands

Sands is a lawyer and his investigation into how the legal case was made for torture in the US is fascinating and includes extensive interviews with a lot of those involved. He focuses a great deal on Al-Qahtani’s case and interrogation log. For a good summary of the argument of the book, see Sands’ article ‘The Green Light‘ at Vanity Fair.
Standard Operating Procedure

This documentary directed by Errol Morris focuses on the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison made famous with photographs taken by military personnel of inmates being mistreated and humiliated – but it is an interesting companion piece to Sands’ book, as both deal with the issue of where responsibility for these abuses lie. (There is also a book that was made in concert with the film, called The Ballad of Abu Ghraib in the US and Standard Operating Procedure in the UK – Amazon.com/co.uk, BookDepository.com/co.uk).
Wikipedia
Al-Qahtani’s Wikipedia entry is quite thorough.
